How to Use a Pulse Oximeter

Pulse Oximeter: Measures the amount of oxygen in the blood

When a person overdoses, their breathing slows/stops and they do not have enough oxygen in their blood. Using a pulse oximeter can help tell IF and WHEN a person needs Narcan.

Reading the Pulse Ox (%SpO2)

Above 96%

  • No Narcan!

89% - 95%

  • Check for signs of an overdose

  • Place person in the recovery position

  • Stay with the person and continue to check their pulse ox

Below 89%

  • Give Narcan

  • Call 911

  • After Narcan is given place person in recovery position

Best practices:

  • A pulse ox is not 100% right, always check for other signs of an overdose! If individual stays unresponsive, call 911!

  • Use the middle or ring finger as they are least likely to be calloused

  • Black or darker skin can cause higher read on the pulse ox.

  • Nail polish can also impact how well the pulse ox works.
