How to respond to seizures

What does a seizure look like?

  • Sudden muscle stiffness, loss of strength, falling over

  • Quick, uncontrolled jerking movements

  • Confusion or trouble speaking

  • Signs of loss of bodily control, such as someone biting their tongue or urinating on themselves.

What to do if someone is having a seizure:

  1. Clear the area around them.

  2. Time the seizure.

  3. Place them on their side if they’re lying down.

  4. Place a pillow or jacket under their head.

Call 9-1-1 if the person:

  • has a seizure that is longer than 5 minutes.

  • is having a seizure for the first time.

  • has multiple seizures.

  • gets injured during the seizure.

  • has diabetes and loses consciousness.

  • is pregnant.

DO NOT:

  • restrict their movement.

  • give mouth-to-mouth.

  • put anything in their mouth.

  • give them food or drink until the seizure stops.
