How to respond to seizures

What does a seizure look like?

Sudden muscle stiffness, loss of strength, falling over

Quick, uncontrolled jerking movements

Confusion or trouble speaking

Signs of loss of bodily control, such as someone biting their tongue or urinating on themselves.

What to do if someone is having a seizure:

1. Clear the area around them.

2. Time the seizure.

3. Place them on their side if they’re lying down.

4. Place a pillow or jacket under their head.

Call 9-1-1 if the person:

has a seizure that is longer than 5 minutes.

is having a seizure for the first time.

has multiple seizures. g

ets injured during the seizure.

has diabetes and loses consciousness.

is pregnant.

DO NOT:

restrict their movement.

give mouth-to-mouth. put anything in their mouth.

give them food or drink until the seizure stops.
